Impact of Education on Effective Leadership

Although some of the world’s most respected business leaders are highly educated (Jack Welch has a Ph.D. in engineering, Warren Buffet has a graduate degree in Economics from Columbia University), others are not (neither Bill Gates nor Michael Dell completed undergraduate degrees). In your opinion, what contribution can education make to effective leadership? What is necessary for effective leadership that is not gained through formal education?
