Health and Safety Article Report (50 points)
Purpose of assignment: Satisfies course objective C: accident causation and costs; hierarchy of exposure controls.
Choose and summarize a peer-reviewed health and safety article. In context of the course material, describe the strengths and weaknesses of the research approach, any sources of bias accounted for, and explain what you would have done differently to make the paper stronger.
Course learning outcome (CLO) alignment: Supports the course learning objectives:
• CLO# 2: Describe the general administrative rules and duties under the act, including compliance with standards, and OSHA enforcement procedures and procedures for adjudication of citations and fines at the federal and state level.
• CLO#4: Describe procedures for identifying and controlling exposures to hazards in the general industry and construction work environments.
• CLO#5: Identify the elements needed for designing effective occupational safety and health program.
Assignment: Choose and review a relevant occupational safety and health study that has been recently (2012-2017) published in a professional, peer-reviewed journal.
The report should be no more than 2 pages, single-spaced, not including title page, references, figures and tables. Have a separate title page (name, date, student ID, article title). Write in 12-point font, Times New Roman only – No bold type, except for headings and subheading. One inch margins.
In your own words, your report should include the following – you must have these 5 headings in your report:
(1) Problem statement – What was the purpose of the study, including occupational significance?
(2) Background – Describe any pertinent history and regulations or guidelines, including proper citations.
(3) Methods – Discuss what was done in the study to answer the research question including methodology/data analysis procedures.
(4) Results – What did the study determine?
(5) Conclusions – What are the implications of the findings and impact on worker health & safety? Could regulations, laws or guidelines be developed or updated based on the findings? What are the strengths & limitations? What would you have done differently?
Students may not use the same article for a report that another student has ‘claimed’ on the Canvas discussion board. Therefore, once you have selected the article you want to use, you must check the discussion board to see if someone else has selected it. If not, post it (full citation, see example) on the discussion board so others know that it is “taken”. This will be determined on a first come, first served basis.
