Describe How To Define A Problem Statement In Research

Defining a research problem is one of the most important steps in any research. Without a research problem, there is no research to do. It can be said that a research problem steers the rest of the activities in a research work right from research objectives, hypotheses, literature review, conceptual/theoretical framework, research methodology, data collection, data analysis, presentation of findings, to the conclusion. At any given stage of the research process, you must always ask yourself “which problem(s) am I trying to solve?” If you do not have a ready answer to such a question, you have to go back to where you stated the problem. In research, it is also important to state the problem clearly. There should be no ambiguity as to what you want to achieve at the end of the research process. An ambiguous statement of the problem will not take you anywhere. It is like driving in a desert without a compass.

How to define a research problem

Coming up with a research problem is never a one-time activity and it is usually done at the early stages. It is rare to come up with a strong statement of a research problem firs time. Often, it begins with a rough idea. Then you continue refining it by adding or subtracting some words. Often, it is best practice to conduct a literature review on the topic one is interested in. For instance, if your area of interest is domestic violence, you may want to read a lot of previous research work carried about domestic violence. You may find researchers in the past have studied various aspects of domestic violence but there may be a gap. As an example, you may find that there is no research done about the relationship between domestic violence and income among couples or an association between domestic violence and weather. Besides literature reviews, it may be also important to study previous experiments. If you are a psychologist and studying intelligence, you may find out that there has been no experiment to test intelligence among various animals. You may want to design an experiment that measures intelligence of birds or a specific species of birds. Still, if you find there is such an experiment, you may proceed to use the same test to determine intelligence of the same bird species in different geographical areas to determine if their intelligence is consistent. Although previous experiments may have been successful, you may disagree with the tests used, methodology, results, or the way the data was analyzed. In such a case, you may have to rework the research process and test the hypothesis once more.

Analytical Research Essay Question (Academic Writing)

Conventions of Analytical writing:

  •  An appropriate topic (it must allow people to possess different opinions on the topic, though they might share a point of agreement. Non-arguable topics based on personal taste or preference, or they cannot be resolved with reasons appropriate for an academic context.)
  •  A clear position.  In academic writing, the stance is usually laid out in a thesis, though not always
  • A set of reasons stating why your position is valid
  • Evidence used to support the reasons. The evidence should be appropriate for the audience and context

Assignment:   Pick your favorite feature length film and analyze the following elements:

  • Camera Angles
  • Editing
  • Lighting
  • Sound
  • Pick specific scenes to prove your position (you must include what time the scene appears on screen or an        estimate).

You will also be graded on punctuation and formatting. 100 points.

Major Research Paper -Info Tech In Global Economy

  1. This assignment will be one of several throughout your PhD program that we use to help you prepare for the dissertation process. One of the core competencies necessary to succeed in a doctoral program is the ability to identify other research that pertains to your own. This means you’ll have to identify similar research, read the papers, and assimilate prior work into your own research. An annotated bibliography helps you develop and hone these research skills.
This assignment is listed on the syllabus as “Major research paper” and is worth 30% of your grade. Your paper will be an annotated bibliography, specifically focusing on the topic of using simulations for policy making. The papers you select must address how IT is used to model behavior for policy making.
You paper must be in correct APA format, use correct grammar, and will need to include at five (5) resources, ALL of which must:
    1) Be current. Published within the last few years.
    2) Be peer-reviewed.
    3) Relate directly to using simulations for policy making. The papers you select must address how IT is used to model behavior for policy making.
USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!!! DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!!!!
Remember that an annotation is not the same as an abstract. Abstracts are descriptive. Your annotations are to be evaluative and critical. Give me enough information for me to decide if I’m interested enough to read the paper, and also how you perceive the paper. Don’t go skimpy on these annotations, but DO NOT write too much here. Quality is far more important that quantity. This exercise is for each of you to demonstrate that you can identify, categorize, and digest multiple research papers.
Every resource you choose must be peer reviewed. That means the paper must have undergone a formal peer review before being published in a journal or presented at a conference. You must ensure that your resources have undergone rigorous reviews. In most cases, you can find out the review process for a conference or journal by visiting the appropriate web site. Do not simply assume that a resource is peer reviewed – check it out.
