10 Tips on How to Select a College
- Decide the program you want to pursue. It does not help to have a list of ten colleges if none of them offers the program you are passionate about.
- Create a list of colleges that offer the program you are interested in
- Compare their reputations. Which college(s) in your list is ranked among the best in the program you have chosen?
- Shorten the list by comparing other factors such as location, fees, availability of financial assistance, diversity of student population, social amenities, time is taken to complete the program, availability of residential buildings, and so forth.
- Consider the location. Do you want to study in the tropics where there is favorable warm weather throughout the year or in the winter can last longer with ski sports? College is not about education only. You may want to have bot the best experience and the best education.
- The setting is also another important factor when choosing a college. There is an urban college located in a thriving cosmopolitan with thrilling nightlife. There is another college located in the outskirts of the city or rural area with great ambience but boring nightlife. Which one do you prefer?
- Some college admits tens of thousands of students, while others admit hundreds with small classes. There are colleges with more than one campus. Do you like big colleges with great diversity or small population colleges with little diverts? You need to choose wisely.
- Money matters in college education. You want to start and finish your studies. Ensure that the available resources can take you until the final year. Some colleges are cheap, while others are highly expensive yet they offer the same education.
- Some colleges are affiliated to some religions. It is therefore important to pay attention to the type of college you are applying. Is the department you are applying for focusing on researching or teaching, or both? Is the college categorized as public or private?
- Financial aid and scholarship. Not all students are endowed with resources. You may need financial help or scholarship to supplement the little resources you have. Therefore, one of your criteria may be to consider a college that offers financial aid or scholarship.
These tips are not exhaustive. There are several criteria that one has to choose from. This includes the language spoken by majority of a population. A college may be offering a program in the language you are fluent in, but the rest of the population in the country speak a different language. This may not work out well for some students.
