Using the “Panopticism” chapter from Discipline and Punish as your guide, discuss how Foucault’s idea of self-surveillance applies to some contemporary situation. Consider social media, community responses to “shelter-in-place” regulations, and so on. Crucially, ask yourself whether “Panopticism” can serve a beneficial social function or if it’s always the repressive force that Foucault seems to believe it is.
