Performance Management Accountability

In Dave Ulrich’s Foreward comments in Tamra Chandler’s book, How Performance Management
is Killing Performance, he discusses the concepts of positive intent vs. performance outcomes
and the challenge of performance management with and without accountability and or flexibility.
Consider his comments as well as those of Tamra Chandler and answer the following questions:

• Do you believe the Performance Management System/Approach that gives the employee
maximum flexibility in setting their own performance expectations are most effective? Why or
why not?
• If you could create the ideal performance management approach (the approach that clearly
drives performance) for the organization you work for how would you balance accountability with
flexibility?
