Background: A research paper is a piece of academic writing based on its author’s original research
on a particular topic, and the analysis and interpretation of the research findings. This project moves
beyond giving a one-sided approach towards a topic but complicates the conversation with
discussions and analysis of naysayers, critical examination and uses of sources and organization into
a fully fleshed-out professional piece of writing. Rhetorical devices such as: ethos, pathos and logos
are to be successfully included throughout this paper.
This paper seeks to satisfy the following Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s):
1. Construct arguments that explore complex academic issues by evaluating differing ideas on
an issue, testing rival hypotheses, and responding to the challenges to one’s own argument.
2. Write unified, well-organized, text-based essays of various lengths, applying a variety of
rhetorical strategies with arguable theses and persuasive support, free of disruptive errors.
Prompt: You are to compose a 3-4 page research paper (not including the cover page or the
works cited) on your chosen topic for the semester.
Requirements:
• MLA format throughout the paper: typed, printed in black ink, Times New Roman font, 1-
inch margins and each page after the cover page is numbered with your last name and page
number.
• Cover page: name, class, original and descriptive title, due date and plagiarism agreement
signed.
• Works Cited: List your 6 sources in MLA format. Sources in alphabetical order by author’s
last name. You should have at least 2 journal articles.
• Introduction: effective hook, informative background with, “They Say, I Say” template
usage. clear, specific thesis.
• Body Paragraphs: organized into 3-4 appropriate paragraph headers, in-text citation of
sources, transitional phrases, “They Say, I Say” template usage.
• Conclusion: thesis restatement, “So what?” discussion with “They Say, I Say” template
usage, effective reverse hook.
Every paper must have this signed statement on the bottom of the cover page:
“I understand the rules governing plagiarism and I certify that the work contained in this paper is my
