History of Tattoos
DQ 2 – week5
Watch “The Cultural Heritage of Tattooing.”
Tattoos, or inking, has increased dramatically in the last few decades, especially among
millennials (Weller, 2014). But what about the history of tattoos? The earliest recorded
evidence of tattooing was carbon dated 5,200 years ago when the Ice Man was
discovered in 1991 (Lineberry, 2007). People have used tattoos for thousands of years “as
amulets, status symbols, declarations of love, signs of religious beliefs, adornments, and
even forms of punishment” (Lineberry, 2007, para 1).
