Assignment #5
After reading the book chapter and listening to the lecture, you should be familiar with the processes of transcription and translation and how DNA is the molecule that really directs these processes. In this assignment, you will decode a DNA message. In order to accomplish this, you must follow the procedure that takes place within your cells. You will be expected to solve similar problems on the midterm. Follow the steps below in order to decode the message within the DNA sequence. Assume that there are no introns in the DNA sequence below. ****Your work for all three steps must be included on your assignment to get full credit****
Step 1: DNA is transcribed into mRNA. This is done nucleotide by nucleotide.
Step 2: mRNA is translated into protein. Determine the amino acid that corresponds to each mRNA codon by using the mRNA dictionary (see next page).
Step 3: Look up the symbol for each amino acid in the dictionary (see next page) & record the symbol (Spc = space) on the appropriate line. If you have done this correctly, the symbols will spell out a meaningful message. The first part of the sequence has been solved for you.
