Start with an attention-catching device or hook. This could be a dramatic story (anecdote), a shocking fact, humor, a rhetorical question, or your own best attempt to grab the reader’s interest.

Have a clearly stated claim or thesis on Page 1 — a great place to put it is in between your hook and the beginnings of the body of your essay. Your thesis should fit into one sentence and it should be focused on an issue that is factual, specific, and academic in nature.

Have a body that stays on topic (if you are writing things that don’t help to support your claim, you’re probably staying off topic), references only reputable, objective, and credible sources, and acknowledges those sources with a parenthetical citation (Lira 102), or, if you’re quoting directly from your source, quotation marks and a parenthetical citation: “Covid 19 sucks flat Mr. Pibb through a bendy straw” (Lira 102).

Be written in such a way that the writer’s own biases do not interfere with his or her ability to fairly examine the issue from every side, and in such a way that the writer’s biases are not evident to the reader.

Avoid making fallacious arguments.

Acknowledge other points of view that do not agree with the writer’s main claim. You should not mock or distort the claim you don’t agree with (which could be a straw man fallacy) but you should show why your claim is stronger or better supported than the opposition’s.

Include a conclusion in which you briefly review how the information you brought up supports your thesis.

End with a Works Cited page that uses MLA format. If you use any sort of automatic citation generator, you must fill in all the information it asks you to plug in, and review the work that the citation generator has done because they often make truly stupid mistakes.

Have a minimum length of 4 pages plus a Works Cited.
