Objective
Summarize major historical periods of presidential doctrines that have significantly shaped U.S. foreign policy.  As stated in the “U.S. Presidential Doctrine” reading, “[Presidential Doctrines] are all notable for how they have shaped U.S. influence and standing in the world (positively or negatively), and collectively have contributed to the modern global environment and the place in it the U.S. holds” (various sources, n.d.).
Instructions

  1. Paper Preparation
    1. Review the Analysis Paper IMI presentation, and the rubric (below) for this assignment.
    2. Review the Presidential Doctrine reading, and conduct other research as necessary.
  2. Choose a major historical period of presidential doctrine (as presented in IMI):
    1. 19th and early 20th Century
    2. Second half of 20th Century
    3. Early 21st Century
  3. Write and color-code your thesis statement in a claimfollowed by a credible reason format.
  4. Summarize your historical period, focusing on the Environment, Problem, and Approach Framework:
    1. Environment:summarize and incorporate relevant conditions of the environment contributing to the chosen historical period/epoch.
      1. Describe the relevant conditions to the current environment, the catalyst, and the desired state.
    2. Problem:summarize and address the problem that gave rise to the presidential doctrineIncorporate both challenges (to be overcome) and opportunities (to be leveraged) to achieving the desired state.
      1. Develop a problem statement that summarizes the conditions.
    3. Approach:summarize the approach characterized by the foreign policy focus of the doctrine.
      1. Explain how the challenges were overcome and the opportunities were leveraged, then summarize the approach characterized by the foreign policy focus of the doctrine.

Paper Structure

  • Use APA format (double spaced, 12-point font in Times New Roman, etc.)
  • Title Page Abstract (150-250 words) Required for this Assignment
  • Introduction, Body, and Conclusion (750-1000 words not including the abstract)
  • Reference Page containing a minimum of three (3) references with corresponding citations
