What is the role of the nurse?

An assignment answering the question: What is the role of the nurse?

Discuss the important factors of what a nurse would need to do or consider when providing care for a service user or patient.

Choose a service user or patient from one of the four case studies presented in the module.

Your discussion must include the following factors:

  • Biological –Identify one physical condition that the patient/service user suffers from and explain what the condition is and how it impacts them.
  • Psychological – Identify one psychological factor that is important in the case study and discuss how the nurse can support the service user/patient with this need.
  • Social – Discuss one social factor that is important to the case study and identify how the nurse can support the service user/patient with this need.
  • Legal – Discuss how law and legislation could impact on the nurse’s decision making, when caring for the patient/service user.
  • Professional and Ethical – Discuss the professional and ethical factors the nurse would need to consider in relation to the case study.
  • Health Promotion – Explain how the nurse will try and promote the patients’ health in relation to one or more of the above factors.
  • Communication – In relation to any of the above factors, identify and discuss appropriate skills the nurse may use when communicating.

To support your discussion, you should refer to and use relevant, and appropriate, academic literature including the NMC (2018) Code of Conduct. Some of this you will find from resources provided during the module and on the module reading list. We encourage you to use additional sources of information that goes beyond the literature provided. The BCU Harvard Referencing system must be used, your reference list should be presented in a single list in alphabetical order at the end of your assignment.
