Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Formative and Summative Assessment
Formative assessment is primarily developmental in nature, and is designed to give feedback to learners on their performance and how it can be improved. Formative assessment is a key part of the learning process, and has been shown to contribute to enhancement of learning and raising of standards. Summative assessment is designed to measure the extent to which a learner has achieved the intended learning outcomes of a module. The summative component of an assessment task is designed solely to provide a measure of the achievement of a learning outcome by a learner. Summative assessment should assess achievement of all learning outcomes in a secure, fair and accurate manner.
Formative Assessment for CBT
Formative Assessment is a compulsory part of successful completion of this module. For formative assessment of CBT students will be expected to participate in a short role play demonstrating the use of CBT strategies and techniques for which they will receive verbal and written feedback from their fellow classmates and the module leader.
Summative Assessment for CBT
Students will be expected to demonstrate achievement of their learning outcomes by submitting a 3000 word reflective account of learning in relation to using the principles of evidence-based cognitive behavioural therapy. This reflective account should incorporate a critical analysis of how the techniques they have identified are linked to the evidence base of cognitive behavioural therapy within their own practice area.
The reflection must incorporate a critical review of learning gained through the role-plays and formative assessment conducted in class.
The assignment should include the following elements:
- A critical appraisal of CBT its background and how it is relevance to students’ own practice.
- A critical review of relevant literature in relation to strategies/ techniques being discussed.
- A reflective account of the purpose of assessment tools, homework and outcome measures in CBT.
- Completed ‘Formative Assessment’ documents from in class role play. [ 2x ABC Tools, I x Completed feedback sheet )
- A full reference list compliant with MU referencing style.
Completion of both Formative and Summative assessment are required for successful completion of Module.
