Advanced Materials and Processing
You are given an engineering material, part of an engineering device, or the full device. It can be a water pump, a valve, or a rim of a tyre.
You are required to:
The Engineering Alloy component I have selected is a gate valve housing, these are made out of many different alloys and can have a few different manufacturing processes to create them depending on their environment and cost to manufacture.
See picture below of an example;
(2,500 words).
Instructions
Based on the information in this course, you will prepare a research paper that will explain how
modern fire behavior is influenced by building construction and will conclude with an argument
for the necessity of residential fire sprinklers. Unfortunately, there is a debate regarding benefit
versus cost for the installation of residential fire sprinklers. Your ultimate job in this research
paper is to end the debate with sufficient support for the use of residential fire sprinklers.
In addition, you will discuss within your paper each of the following items.
Explain how modern building construction has changed fire dynamics.
Describe and explain the four methods of extinguishing fires.
Describe how the chemical chain reaction of fire can be interrupted to facilitate extinguishment.
Describe the possible fuel package energy within the homes discussed. Provide an outside
picture of the homes discussed.
Describe water’s relationship with fire extinguishment.
Provide a cost-benefit analysis on the installation of fire sprinklers.
Describe methods to remove oxygen from a fire to extinguish flames.
Describe the impacts on the community regarding fire.
Again, your main task in this assignment is to research this topic and provide a reasonable
argument for why residential sprinklers provide protection against the dangers and are cost
effective for the general population. Support your evidence with sources and provide references
for them
Instructions
Unless otherwise stated, answer in complete sentences, and be sure to use
correct English spelling and grammar. Sources must be cited in APA format. Your response
should be four (4) pages in length; refer to the “Assignment Format” page for specific format
requirements.
Requirements
For this assignment, you’ll investigate the sustainability potential for each of the primary building
material systems we’ve covered so far in this course: wood, steel, concrete, and masonry.
Create a list and rank your materials in order of the highest ranked material first and the lowest
ranked material last.
Following each material, write a short explanation of why you assigned the rank to each material and provide at least one link to a recent online article (no older than four years) that validates
your ranking.
When selecting the link to support your ranking, select publications and organizations that will
not have a bias or financial interest for a given material. For example, select an analysis by the
National Association of Home Builders instead of the American Wood Council when evaluating
wood sustainability.
The following are several elements of sustainability you should evaluate as you make your
ranking:
Energy efficiency of the material over the life of the structure
The overall carbon footprint of the material
Transportation costs
Weather resistance and long-term maintenance and repair costs
Material expansion and contraction and acoustic properties
Labor availability and overall labor costs
